A Timeless Design Legacy; Richard Schultz and the Iconic Knoll 1966 Furniture Collection

In the world of modern furniture design, few names resonate as strongly as Richard
Schultz and Knoll. Their collaboration in the creation of the Knoll 1966 Furniture
Collection stands as a testament to timeless design, innovation, and enduring quality. Let us indulge on the story behind Richard Schultz and the iconic collection that has left an indelible mark on the world of design.

The Genesis of Knoll 1966 Furniture Collection: In the mid-1960s, Florence Knoll had retired from Knoll and had moved to Palm Beach Florida. She was not pleased with how steel outdoor furniture would rust in that climate and contacted Richard Schultz for decent outdoor furniture. Richard responded with the 1966 Collection. In an interview, Richard said. “Most outdoor furniture in those days was designed to look like it was before the French Revolution, with stamped out metal, bunches of flowers and leaves; it was very much period looking furniture. I designed the first outdoor furniture that enthusiasts of modern design could say, ‘this is a breath of fresh air.

In this series, Schultz used pioneering materials where he constructed his furniture from sculptural cast aluminum components, which are powder coated for further resilience to the elements. The seating pieces used a synthetic mesh and outdoor belting leather-like material, which were not only durable but also weather-resistant. The tables use porcelain-coated steel tops with a vibrant array of colors.

Central to the Collection are several iconic pieces that have become synonymous with modern outdoor living. The 1966 Dining Table, with its simple yet sophisticated
silhouette, serves as a focal point for outdoor gatherings; and the 1966 Lounge Chair, with its ergonomic design and comfort that is an invitation for relaxation. Each piece in the collection tells a story of innovation, craftsmanship, and timeless design.

Legacy and Influence: The Knoll 1966 Furniture Collection has left an indelible mark on the world of design, influencing countless designers and shaping the way we perceive outdoor furniture. Richard Schultz legacy extends far beyond the collection itself, encompassing a lifetime of dedication to the pursuit of excellence in design. His visionary approach and commitment to innovation continue to inspire designers around the globe.
